William Golden

The American graphic artist William Golden was born in New York in 1911 as the youngest of twelve children. William Golden attended the Vocational School for Boys, where he was taught the heliogravure process and the basics of graphic design.
In 1928 William Golden went to Los Angeles, where he started out working for a printer and later wored for the "Los Angeles Examiner". On his return to New York, William Golden worked for the "Journal American" in the early 1930s and subsequently "House & Garden" magazine, a Condé Nast publication.
In 1937 William Golden left Condé Nast to work for CBS radio, becoming art director there in 1940. After the war, William Golden again worked for CBS until 1946, developing the CBS corporate image.
When the television era dawned, William Golden also played an important role in developing the look of the channel. In 1950 William Golden designed the distinctive CBS logo, a stylized eye in a circle, which is still - slightly modified - in use today.
